When it comes to gardening, some it can be enjoyable and sometimes it can be downright back-breaking work. While it might be good news for your local chiropractor, it isn’t the best news for anyone who really enjoys to garden. There are some great ideas to ease the pains that go along with this highly enjoyable hobby and pastime. One way to ease your back is by using raised garden beds. These are just like what they sound like, a raised gardening area. So, instead of stopping over to plant, you can do it from a near seated position. This can greatly ease your lower back from strain. Another idea is to get a garden cart. While they will not help you plant your garden directly, they will help you to transport all the stuff around your yard. Garden carts come in a range of styles and price ranges. We’ll go over a few of the more popular categories of them here and give you a better idea of what to look for.

If you want to get really technical, you could argue that a cart does nothing more or less than a wheelbarrow can do. You can throw your gardening tools, gloves, potting soil, garden pots, etc. in that wheelbarrow just as easily as a cart. While you can’t really argue with your logic, there are some things that make carts a bit more user-friendly. For one thing, a cart can come in either two wheel or four wheel styles. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The two wheel style will be easier to move around, navigation-wise, as it is less bulky. Typically, the extra wheels also add quite a bit of weight to the cart. So, using one with two wheels and a handle is the preferred style for this with lighter gardening duties or who have to maneuver in tighter spots and spaces. It takes more effort and is a bit more uncomfortable to lift and push a wheelbarrow around. It simply has a different intended purpose.

On the other hand, if you haul a lot of soil or heavier plants and pots, then a four wheel choice makes better sense. The four wheel cart looks a lot like a child’s wagon on steroids. These heavier-duty carts have a rating of up to 600 lbs. in some cases. Compare this with the 200 lb. capacity of most two wheel designs. And, quite honestly, for some of the models, this would be pushing it, literally.

Some of the more popular and newer garden utility carts are made of heavy plastic materials. These rugged carts can take quite a bit of a beating without causing any problems. In the past, metal and wooden carts were more common. The issue with wood is that it tends to rot and split much sooner than you would hope, limiting its lifespan. Since these carts are often left outdoors, they tend to take a bit more of a beating weathering the elements.

Garden Cart Prices

These carts range in price from around $50 – 150 USD. The difference in range has to do with durability, two or four wheel styles and the brand. It is like with most home products. If there is a brand name that people know and trust, than it can command a higher price tag. Some of them may not even be as preferable to use as a more inexpensive model.

If you are an avid gardener and you have not invested in a garden cart, it is a good idea. Over time, you’ll come to appreciate the way that the cart saves you time and energy hauling your stuff all over your yard and garden area. The intelligent design of some of the more innovative garden carts also allow them to be used to dump soil as well. So, consider purchasing one of these carts so you can do more of what you love for longer.

Have you ever wondered what types of plants would grow best in the spot you’ve got in mind? How about figuring out if your plants will actually produce those juicy, up-your-arm type of messy tomatoes? Well, now you can! With the EasyBloom Plant Sensor, you can find out what your soil conditions are. Not only that, but the probe can provide all sorts of useful data, for both the novice and expert gardener.

So, what is it? The Easy-Bloom Sensor is a simple device that you ‘plug’ into the soil in the area you are interested in and then wait for the recommended time period. Then, once it is done, you simply plug it into your USB port on your PC or Mac and the data starts downloading. You might not be aware of what this little device actually measures or what data you need.

While the Easy Bloom Plant Sensor and Sensor Plus do measure a host of soil condition measurements, they do not measure others. If you are specifically interested in the soil acidity or alkalinity, then you will have to rely on other standard tools to do that. While it is true that some plants are very sensitive to soil pH conditions, the vast majority of plants suffer from soil minerals, over or under-watering and light conditions. This tool DOES measure these important features. In fact, soil moisture sensors like this one are almost worth the price itself. This tool will give you a great starting point to grow the most beautiful plants, flowers, vegetables, herbs and trees you could ever want.

You might be an avid gardener already. Maybe you have some raised garden beds that you’d like to check before your next planting season. This is a great reason to check garden soil using the EasyBloom. For the amateur gardener looking to move more into that perennial ‘green thumb’ category, doing a soil assessment like this can really help out. There are some things that you’ll pick up just from being able to visually inspect and observe. Sometimes, however, what is happening beneath the soil can be deceiving.

That is where this type of soil sensing device comes in handy. Once you plug the sensor into the USB port, the data will yield results based upon several factors that you’ve entered. You will enter in your zip code and this will yield your climate zone and other details specific to your growing area. For this reason, only U.S. customers, currently, may use this product.

Once the data is collected, it can give you recommendations on the best type of plants, flowers, vegetables and trees for your area based upon the readings. These recommendations are based upon the library of information stored and continuously added to their database. They work with botanists and university researchers to constantly add new species to their library.

How Much Does the EasyBloom Plant Sensor Cost?

This device retails for around $60 USD and can be purchased directly from the manufacturer’s website or on sites like Amazon. It is quite durable and can be used over and over. It is able to withstand being outdoors for extended periods, but it is recommended that it not be submerged in water or exposed to heavy sprinkler used areas. You’ll definitely learn some useful information having one of these EasyBloom Plant Sensors for your home and garden.

When discussing garden lighting, it is important to realize that there are dozens of different styles and literally hundreds of different shapes and types of fixtures. So, when you are sitting down to figure out what type of lights would look good in your garden; realize that you may be in for more than you bargained for. You might find yourself in information overload. This is especially true as you sit before your computer browsing the internet through all the outdoor lighting sites.

How can your garden light search be made easier? First of all, determine what type of lighting you are looking for. In other words, do you want the lighting to be something that is more for accenting certain elements in your garden space or do you want to illuminate a path or walkway? This similar line of reasoning can apply when looking for patio lights as well. The reason is that in both cases, some lighting will be better suited to provide a more broad type of light to illuminate an entire space, while other styles will work best as a type of spot lighting like you might find in your indoor spaces.

Once you determine what you will need in terms of your lighting preferences, then you can go on a search for the perfect style, shape or fixture. This is another whole area where you can go as simple and conservative as you like up to the most eccentric and artistic as imaginable and everything in between.

If you are just searching for something simple that will cast a light up a tree at night to provide a bit of dramatic lighting for your garden area, then you can find these at your local home improvement warehouse stores. You can, of course, also find these online. Some landscape lighting designers will tell you that the more readily available garden lights from the home improvement warehouses are cheap and unreliable. You’ll have to use your best judgment as to whether you want to put forth the added expense of the lighting that you might find online.

Most of these types of lights will be wired and buried in your soil. A similar type of light can be used to illuminate a path or walkway through your garden. However, instead of aiming upwards, the lights will have a cap to shine the light back to the ground. These come in both stake-in-the-ground models and hanging styles. The hanging ones are just suspended from what looks like a shepherd’s crook and hang about 12-16” from the ground in most cases. Again, these are typically wired to a main electrical line outdoors.

What About Solar Garden Lighting?

If you would rather save money on your lighting and don’t want to have to worry about burying wires and all that, then consider going with solar garden lights. They still come in a variety of styles and models, but you don’t have to concern yourself with the electrical wiring. With some models, it is as simple as staking them in the ground and that night they will shine a path for you. Simple.

Now, there are also some drawbacks with solar. The most obvious one is that in poor weather conditions, the solar panel on the top of the light (most common model) will not be receiving enough light to charge the battery to power the light. Also, if there is snow or grime that gets on the solar cells, they will not collect any energy. Additionally, the power that they put out may not be enough to last through the night if you so wish. One solution is to get a style that does have a larger battery backup reserve or one that can be plugged in just for days like this. There are also styles that have a larger solar cell panel that can be mounted nearby, then wired to the light fixtures so that each one is powered without the need for a solar cell on top of the individual lights. These are just some ideas to get you started or help you refine your search for your new lights in your garden.

This is one of those topics where it is fairly self-explanatory to some degree. The thing about awnings is that many are made of the same material while only some have more specific uses. Well, in the case of garden awnings, we are simply talking about a type that is used in a garden space. Now, depending upon where you live in the country or where you are from, you might have different ideas about what a ‘garden space’ is. For some of us, the garden is a place where we grow plants or vegetables. It is hard to imagine that it would serve as a place for get togethers or as a gathering place. However, for some, this is exactly what it is. The outdoor room or garden room as it can be called, is one such place that will become the favorite gathering place for you and your guests.

What you need in order for your space to feel comfortable is the use of garden awnings. Again, because we are mostly referring to the location that the awning will be used and not a specific type of awning, per se, a discussion about basic awning features and functions will work here. For one point of interest, awnings come in a variety of styles and fabrics. What one person calls an awning, another refers to it as a canopy. It really is inconsequential what you call them, as long as you know what you want. And, what you want is something that will provide you shade when you want it and where you need it. In the case of a true garden space, at least in terms of how we see things around here at Patio Covers Place, an awning could really help you to get some great sun exposure when needed and avoid over ‘cooking’ your plants in the intense summer sun.

To some, the term garden awning and garden canopy are synonymous. To some degree, we would agree with this. However, garden canopies are mostly seen as those ‘easy up’ or ‘pop-up’ style structures. These work great for temporary sun protection in a more inconspicuous area. But, if you are wanting to create a nice shaded are for your patio or garden, one of these cheap canopies is not the recommended way to go. It isn’t that there is anything wrong with these types of structures, they just will not give you quite the look of say a garden arbor or pergola would. Again, these are specific structures that you may not be interested in, so a simple canopy might fit your needs quite well. Do your research and determine if what you want is more formal patio awnings, like the retractable or motorized styles or if some of these garden awnings are more your style.

For many of us, gardening is a way to get our hands in the Earth. It helps us connect with that vital element that helps sustain life and can help us to literally feel grounded in our lives. For the true die hard green thumb crowd, nothing but Mother Earth will do. But, if you are new to gardening or have a specific place you would like to grow some type of herb garden, but don’t have the right soil condition, a raised planting bed is a great option. As the name implies, these are nothing but boxes or plots of soil that are some height above ground level. They are filled with a mixture of soil and function the same as any garden plot.

However, there are other benefits of a raised bed. For example, you can garden at waist height. This can make it much easier on your body. Instead of having to get down on your knees and stress your back as you reach out to garden, with a raised bed, you can either sit on the edge of the bed or bend slightly at your knees to reach your crops. Another option is that you can control the watering with a drip system or by hand. Many plots that are in the ground will be subjected to flooding or other issues that are out of your control.

A raised bed can grow just as bountiful a crop as any grown in the ground. The types of vegetables, flowers or herbs that you are able to grow is not limited by having a raised bed. The only concern you might have is with larger vegetables or fruits like watermelons or pumpkins. These could still grow in a raised bed, but they will occupy a lot

This is a classic looking raised garden bed.

more of the space. In doing this, they may crowed out some of your other plants. You would be better off growing these in the ground. Much like how a patio garden can be considered a ‘container garden’ you might say the same thing about a raised bed type. Meaning, you could eventually just dismantle your raised bed and move it or take it apart if you ever decide to remove it. You might even want to transplant your plants and herbs into pots, take down your bed and take your garden with you to your new home if you ever moved – not likely, but it is possible.

Most raised garden beds are constructed of wood. The size of the bed is really up to you, but you want to build it a size that you think you can manage comfortably. You don’t want to be reaching too far to get to your plants, so having one that is a manageable size is the key point. The depth of the bed or height if you will shouldn’t be so tall that it is unsafe if it ever was to spill out, but deep enough for the roots to get adequate nutrition from your bed itself. So, a depth of 16-18” is a good depth. You could make it 24” high, but the soil depth only needs to really be about 12-16” for your plants. The width of your box could be 4’ to allow for easy access from both sides. Then, the length is really up to you. A 4’ x 8’ bed is a good size to grow most any vegetables. You could also go for two 4’ x 4’ beds to accomplish the same growing area, but with less overlap of plants. This way, you could grow specific types of vegetables in one and a different type in the other. Again, this is really just an issue of personal preference once you decide what you want to grow.

Materials to Use For Building Your Raised Planting Bed

As described, wood is the most material to use. You might consider using cement blocks like what is used for fences. However, the material in these blocks can leach out over time and alter the pH balance in your soil. Also, you will not want to use pressure-treated lumber as you will be consuming the foods you grow here. Pressure-treated woods have chemicals that you would not want to consume and are not safe for consumption anyway. The same is true of railroad ties or old telephone poles. These are treated with some highly toxic substances and should be avoided. Wood choices like cedar and redwood make excellent beds. Not only are they safe for your garden, but they weather the elements quite gracefully, adding another dimension to your outdoor patio space. So, grab your tools off your potting bench and get to work growing in your new raised planting beds this weekend.

There is always a good season to enjoy your patio. Depending upon the climate in your region of the country, you may benefit from even longer patio enjoyment seasons. What is something that we all need to get more enjoyment from our patio space – shade! The problem is, you don’t want to sacrifice looks strictly for function. All too often, this is exactly what happens. After all, you could simply hang sheets on your patio cover if all you want is shade. Your neighbors wouldn’t be too thrilled and neither would you, most likely.

So, the question is, how can you carve out a little piece of shady heaven in your garden or patio space? One attractive option is with patio arbors. You could consider these both as sculptural pieces in your yard as well as functional places to get a shady seat. Many times you will see an arbor used to support some vines or other flowering plants over a nice patio swing. The same type of set up can be achieved by having a garden bench sitting patiently beneath one of these handsome arbors.

What Types Are There?

A perfect spot to sit and swing beneath a patio arbor.

An arbor may go by several other names, which we will briefly parse out here. On Patio Covers Place, we use the term arbor to describe a wood or metal structure that typically has four posts and a cross-beam ‘roof’. They are much like a pergola, except that they are smaller in size and scale. Occasionally, you will also hear the term trellises used to describe these structures. A patio trellis, in our mind, is more of a two-dimensional structure that is meant to support smaller growing vines and is often mounted up against a wall or fence for added depth and dimension.

A patio arbor can also welcome you into your patio or garden space. They may have an arched roof or top that serve as a door to your space. You might find that they are usually constructed of wood. Because of its ability to be crafted into many styles, wood is an easy choice. Cedar and redwood make excellent choices for their ability to weather to a nice color and also stand up to the elements.

You can care for them by sealing and staining each year for a structure that will last you for years to come. Metal arbors are also available. Wrought iron is making a comeback in many outdoor home and garden designs and features. This will also provide support for your plants and vines, all while adding a nice strength and timeless appearance to your garden space. Whether you choose wood or metal, you really can’t go wrong with either choice of these patio arbors.

When discussing landscape design ideas and plans, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. If you live in a newer master-planned community, you are likely to be surrounded by landscapes that look very similar to yours. In most cases, these are dictated by community homeowner’s associations (HOAs) and you have little control over what you can do to really make your landscape stand out. Whether you live in a community that has regulations like this or not, you are free to make your backyard space whatever you wish.

You can choose to create a tropical oasis or keep your landscape design elements in line with your local environment. At Patio Covers Place, we support the use of landscape materials, plants and design that take advantage of local environmental considerations to not only give your plants the best chance of thriving but also to preserve local resources. If you live in the desert southwest, then your landscape plans should take arid conditions to heart. That lush full green lawn you are used to ‘back east’ is not supposed to grow in the middle of the desert. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t have a beautiful green yard and patio space.

Pool Landscaping Ideas

Don't try this pool landscape in the desert southwest.

There are several things to consider when you are formulating plantings ideas. This is especially true of swimming pool landscaping. The main reason is that both debris and run-off will affect your experience with your pool or patio space. Without knowing it, your plants might look great in the spring or summer, only to drop all their leaves or have a big bloom of flowers that drop right into your pool. If your pool landscaping plans don’t take these matters into consideration, you might find yourself forever frustrated by the space you spent so much time and money to enjoy.

To make sure that this doesn’t happen, look at various pool landscape magazines and online sites to research the look you want. Then, see if those plants or those like them can be supported in your local climate. Both water and sunlight conditions will need to be accounted for with your design. Also, orientation of the area you wish to landscape needs to be looked at to maximize the factors that will support the long-term survival of your plants.

What About Pool Hardscape Features

While water is a must-have component to any landscape design, so is outdoor lighting. In order to fully appreciate and enjoy your landscape features, having the right type of accent lighting is critical. Just like having the right patio lights can highlight specific points of interest on you patio, the right landscape lighting can do the same for your pool landscape. These things, combined with other non-living objects and materials are referred to as the pool hardscape elements.

The typical landscaping materials – plants, flowers, shrubs and trees – are all ‘soft’ in substance. These are definitely important, as we’ve discussed here. However, it is these hardscape features that add the punch and background off of which these other elements can pop. Take the pool deck itself. This area can be made of many types of materials that enhance the look of the pool area itself and provide a non-slippery surface. Check out some pool decking ideas here. Things like stamped concrete, concrete patio pavers and other cement finishing ideas can give your pool landscape a very unique appeal.

There is a distinction to be made between the various terms used to describe what are quite similar patio structures. For our purposes here at Patio Covers Place, we will use the terms as described here to discuss these items. You may find that other sites or sources of patio building information use a slightly different nomenclature. In the end, it isn’t critical that there is only one name for something as long as you understand what that item is.

Here, we are talking about the patio trellis. These are nothing more than structures used in a patio or garden space that add dimension, depth and character to the space. Typically, they are constructed of wood, though metal trellises exist as well. In fact, wrought iron trellises or some made with copper can look quite elegant and provide wonderful visual dimension to your space.

A trellis is related to other popular patio structures, the pergola and the arbor. Where we would make the distinction here is that while a pergola is often used as a cover for your patio space, an arbor can be used as a stand-alone structure in a garden space and a trellis is more ‘two-dimensional’. It can certainly be the support for climbing vines and other plants, like both the pergola and arbor as well.

This brings up another term that can be used when talking about such structures, the garden arbor. Garden arbors, are unique in their own right. We would talk about an arbor as a type of smaller pergola. Most pergolas consist of four posts and have beams and a lattice-type roof. They can range in size, but a 10’x10’ pergola could be considered average. A larger arbor could also have four posts, but might be something more like 4’, 6’ or 8’ wide by 2-3’ deep. In other words, you could put a nice garden bench beneath it or have it over your garden or patio entrance. They serve a nice function in this way. Again, like the trellis and pergola, greenery may grow all over it, creating a type of shaded cover all its own.

In the end, don’t get too hung up the name of the patio structure you are wanting. The only way to really find what you want is to do a search. As you are able to refine your search and see the names and pictures of exactly what you are after, then you can make a better decision about it. If that ends up being called a pergola that you want to build, then so be it. If you are looking for more of a ‘background arrangement’, we suggest looking for a suitable patio trellis.

There are a variety of ways that you could get better soil for your garden or planting beds. One way is to buy pre-mixed material that will already have the proper ratio of nitrogen and other nutrients in it. This is the safest bet for the new gardener. This will ensure that you get the right balance and proper nutrition for a wide variety of plants, vegetables or flowers. The other option would be to go with an organic mix that you create using a compost heap.

Compost is nothing more than a mix of non-animal-based food scraps and a mix of ‘green and brown’ materials to create a rich, organic mix for great plant nutrition. You can mix this compost with some pre-mixed material or potting soil to get the process started. The beauty of this is that it is an all-natural way of creating organic mix material for your plants. The nature of the compost is such that it creates heat as it breaks down these organic compounds into smaller and smaller pieces and eventually dirt. This heat kills off potentially harmful organisms and ‘contaminating’ seeds, while allowing other microorganisms to survive. You are really doing nothing more than contributing to the way that Mother Nature works in the first place, so it should be no surprise. The main benefit of composting is that you can recycle, in a way, your vegetable scraps, peels, grass clippings, leaves, and even things like newspapers, coffee grinds and egg shells. There are proper proportions to use in order to get your compost to decompose properly, but that is for another article.

What we want to address here is using a wood chipper to break down larger tree clippings, fallen branches or even to recycle Christmas trees during that time of year. You can use a chipper to create your own ground cover for different types of landscaping. This will keep more moisture in and around your plants and trees allowing you to save water. If there was ever a more environmentally friendly move to make than water conservation, we have not heard of it. While proper energy management is important, we are speaking of ways to work with what nature produces or needs to naturally do its work.

Your chipper will also be helpful in keeping those large branches, trees and other chippable materials out of the landfills. The less of these we have clogging up the landfills, the more room we have for trash that actually needs to be there. With more room, we have more savings in terms of energy to collect and dispose of further waste. So, this in turn also contributes to a local and global sustainable effect. Since you are looking for information regarding a wood chipper, you are familiar with many of these elements about them. You may only be looking for specific models or prices. There is a great chipper shredder found here.

Basically, for residential purposes, you are looking for a chipper that can create a nice mulch for your beds, take care of that yard waste and make quick work of all your ‘dirty work’. Invest in one of these wood chippers and you can get back to what you really want to be doing in no time – like kicking your feet up in your patio swing.

As it turns out, there are as many great ideas for pool landscaping as there are for any other type of backyard or garden designs. The only difference really is in determining what will work best as far as growing, debris and look for your particular pool area. Your swimming pool landscaping will be best enjoyed if it is not an endless hassle to keep out of your pool.

This seems like an elementary point, but you might not know how a plant, shrub or other tree behaves when it is out of season from when you purchase it. You may fall in love with the colors of the flowers or like the shade that the leaves provide only to be disappointed when you find them plugging up your pool skimmer every other day.

The point of having a pool is to be able to enjoy it. The last thing you want to be hassled with is having to clean all your great landscaping ideas out of your pool time and again. Sure, you could hire someone to do this or get one of those swimming pool covers, but it will still affect the performance and function of your pool equipment. Your best bet would be to plan your pool landscaping ideas with respect to your climate and local conditions.

You can see a lovely tropical setting happening in your backyard patio, with your outdoor fireplace, sitting on your chaise lounge listening to some great tunes, melting the night away. The only problem is, if you live in a desert or more frost-prone climate, your tropical paradise oasis will quickly turn into a deserted island in the Sahara. If you don’t match your landscaping to your climate, it will never survive and grow to be what you’d like.

With this in mind, keep native species in mind. Native plants will do much better because, as their name implies, they have adapted over thousands of years to tolerate the weather conditions in your area. Aside from this, they will likely bloom and go dormant at the times that would best suit your swimming season as well. A term that is used for this type of use of native plants and thinking of natural water conservation is called xeriscape. Xeriscaping can allow you to grow many different species of plants with minimal water use. We are big fans of not only sustainable products and materials here at Patio Covers Place, but sustainable landscaping as well. This is a wonderful option for swimming pool landscaping.

Let’s take the desert southwest, for example. There, you can find structures that could shade your backyard, patio and landscape as well. And, you can also have access to all the water you want – even though using it on landscaping can be considered a slightly irresponsible use of natural resources. However, you could grow any number of plants and non-native species. They would require excessive work and also force you to spend more time on them than enjoying your patio or pool. Desert plants can have a wide variety of color and flowers that can bloom nearly year-round, depending upon species.

There are also ‘hardscape’ features to consider. In our example here, the plants and trees would be considered the landscaping, while the hardscape could include things like the rock, flagstone or patio pavers you intend to lay, creating some sort of path or walkway. Your outdoor lighting is also something to consider. Since we were talking about sustainability earlier, let’s continue that theme with a solar discussion for your lighting. Things like solar garden lights are a great way to conserve energy and place points of interest in and around your swimming pool landscaping.

How far you want to go with your landscape designs is really up to you. The ideas and material choices are essentially endless. You can go for a more rustic look and add a nice looking patio cover to go poolside or go with something much more finished in its appearance. Your patio furniture and other outdoor accessories are all part of your overall design as well. Matching your outdoor fabric choices to blend in with your landscaping is a nice touch.

Let’s not forget to mention the pool itself. In many areas of the country, a pool fence is mandatory now in newer construction. There are styles that are less obstructive to your visual line of sight, so they make great choices here. The last thing you want is for your pool fence or other equipment to take away from your swimming pool landscaping design you worked so hard to create.
