Before running to the nearest hardware store to buy supplies, there are several points to investigate further. Size, shape and color are only some of the decisions that need to be planned out before construction begins. There are a wide variety of available sizes and styles which makes it easy to find one that works well with your space.  If the gazebo feels too enclosed or formal, look into using a pergola to fit your backyard space.

Here is a classic looking, wooden gazebo design.

Shape

The traditional octagon shape is the most popular option, but rectangles and squares are also highly requested (see below). When shopping for gazebo designs, you will likely need to decide between a four; six; eight; ten or twelve-sided model. The four-sided version is best if you plan to set it over an object, like a Jacuzzi. The other shapes work well for pavilion-style seating. Keep in mind that the ten and twelve-sided gazebos are very large and will not work well in a cramped space.

Size

Choosing the right size is key to making your backyard look welcoming rather than crowded. An over-sized structure will look out of place in a tiny yard. Measure the proposed area carefully to see which shape will best fit the location. If you plan to use the pavilion over a hot tub or play area, be sure to use a kit that will give ample space for people to enter and exit.

Style

Here is an example of a square gazebo that is screened in.

A gazebo differs from other outdoor structures because it includes a roof, ‘wall’s and often times, more detailing.  You’ll find this especially true when looking into Victorian styles. Screened gazebos, like the one in the photo, make for a great place to relax without worrying about bugs.

Unlike pergola designs, the gazebo will typically include some type of built-in seating. Couple this with your own patio furniture for plenty of seating in the open-air structure. For those that want the comfort of an indoor space with the feel of the outdoors, the use of mesh on the windows will make it feel more like an enclosed deck or sun room. With some paint and other detailing, you can fashion your gazebo to match your home perfectly.

Materials

Wood is the typical material for traditional gazebos, but it is certainly not the only choice. The gazebo canopy can be made of various fabrics, like nylon, polyester and vinyl materials. These canopies are more common with the pop-up style gazebo. If you are unsure of which materials you would like to use, consider the typical weather for your area and your dedication to upkeep. While wood is sturdier than the fabric options, it will need refinishing and maintenance every few years. However, in areas with extreme weather, wood will survive the elements better than other options.

If you are looking into gazebo kits, you’ll find a variety of choices, too. Wood, steel and even vinyl gazebo options exist. Much like the pergola kits, these are made to be easier and quicker to assemble. If you’d rather spend more time under yours than working on it, consider one of these (more expensive) choices.

Cost

Planning out your budget may be the least enjoyable activity when building a gazebo, but it also the most important. While it’s certainly possible to find a cheap gazebo, the trick is to have it look as elegant and well-designed as a more expensive choice.

Everyone has big dreams when it comes to home improvements, but looking at that ten thousand dollar structure is not going to help when your budget is half of that. Look objectively at your finances and decide what you can devote towards building a space that fits your yard. Fabric models will cost considerably less than wood, so keep that in mind if your budget is tight. We’ve discussed shade structures and shade cloth and how they can be used in ways that might give you what you’re after. Remember to include the costs of smaller items if you would like them, such as mesh screen for the windows or new patio furniture.

Once you have taken all of these factors into consideration, then you are ready to start shopping using your gazebo plans. Visit any major hardware store to get a first-hand look at your desired model and talk with construction experts. This will help you get a better feel for how it will look in your yard and give you the chance to ask questions.

Before purchasing all the materials separately, you may find that any of the manufacturers of gazebo kits have models that will save you quite a bit of work. Most DIY plans are found online and are as simple as print and go. Download the plans, then take the included materials list to the hardware store to make sure you get everything you need in as few of trips as possible – we all know you can’t ever make just one trip! Whichever route you choose, you will be on your way to spending lazy afternoons in the comfort of your own gazebo.

The reason that we bring up this topic on our site is because of its use for a patio roof. It makes for a really nice option in terms of aesthetics and it can also be quite simple to install for these applications. If you choose to go with a more expensive metal tile or material like copper, then you’ll probably want to invest in having a professional roofer do the installation. The industrious DIYer could handle a corrugated metal panel install just laid over some rafters or on top of some sheeting.

These types of installations are often more for show than anything that we would consider for protection from the elements in a waterproof sort of way.

Patio Roof Plans

So, what are your plans for your patio’s roof? You should know that the lattice roof found on many pergola designs is quite a popular choice. It is made using a wooden post and beam structure supporting rafters. These are what can then support a lattice structure up top or can be the finished ‘roof’ themselves.

Another option with the pergola is to place this sheet or metal roofing materials directly over these rafters as was just mentioned. Not only does this provide you with more solid shade, but it will also give you a nice sound effect when rain is hitting it.

Next step is to add a metal roof and get an even more efficient and 'clean' rain water collection system for use in the garden.

An additional point that makes a metal patio roof an attractive option is how it can be used with a rain water collection system or cistern. Since metal is naturally mildew and algae growth resistant and not produced with petroleum by-products, it allows for clean water runoff. This rainwater can be collected in your cisterns and used to water your plants in your garden.  This works especially well if your home has continuous or seamless gutters installed.

You know – if you are a frequent visitor of our site – that we are big fans of building with green and environmentally-friendly materials and products wherever possible.   You’ll also appreciate that we find products that are as attractive aesthetically as they are environmentally where such products exist.  This is why we like the idea of a roof plans that call for using metal.

Environmental Benefits of a Metal Roof

It is lightweight, which makes it amenable to being installed over existing roof materials. This minimizes both labor in tearing off an old roof and also reduces waste that will accumulate in a landfill – especially since many older roofs contain those petroleum by-products.

In addition to this, metal is recyclable. In fact, many metal roofs contain as much as 25% recycled (sometimes 95%!) materials. It is also able to allow water to run off and snow to be shed, removing the load on the roof.

We’ve mentioned the algae and mildew resistance. There is also a property known as ‘hydrostatic’ meaning that it protects a roof system from growing fungus created by moisture. This is more of a concern on your home than an open patio space, but it deserves mention, nonetheless.

Finally, metal is an energy efficient choice. It reflects up to 70% of the sun’s energy, minimizing heat retention. On the roof of your home, this could translate into 34% less heat gain when compared to a typical asphalt shingle roof. Speaking of the sun and patio roofs, we’ve also discussed the solar patio cover in another article. You may be interested in that option as well, potentially a combination of both.

For these reasons and more, a patio metal roof makes for a great choice for your unique patio. You’ll have a hard time finding patio covers that provide you with durability through hot and cold temperatures, wet and dry weather cycles and climate zones, high UV ray areas, windy conditions, hail, ice or snow as a metal roof does.

Screened porch plans can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. The total cost of the installation can range anywhere from just a couple hundred dollars for a DIY project to several thousand for an elaborate job done by a professional.

Screened Porch Room

You can also save some money and time using a kit, which will be discussed shortly. The cost will vary depending upon the design’s complexity, the materials used, the size of the structure, any additional custom features and whether you decide to install it yourself or hire a contractor. If you have a porch that you just want to enclose, you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself.  This may or may not involve any building regulation or inspections, coding or permits, so you might need to consult with a professional contractor.

Screen Porch Kits

Building one yourself, like this photo, may take you a week or more. You might be able to save some time building using a screen room kit.

Screen porch kits make for an easy DIY project. They come in a variety of standard sizes and popular colors. Each kit comes with nearly everything needed for the patio enclosure, including aluminum screen panels, lumber support posts and cross beam, and an aluminum frame. Assembling a kit involves first assembling the frame and attaching it to the designated area of the house, and then roof and wall installation. With the help of some friends, you can have most kits installed and ready for use in a single weekend.  Better make the party for next weekend though – you know how these things go!

Kits often include a vinyl roof. Vinyl is durable, resistant to most climate conditions, and easy to replace. There are also different types of screening specially designed to resist things like insects or pet abuse. Different window shapes and designs, knee walls, and high-quality ceilings further increase the attractiveness and security of the structure. A weather-resistant sealant tape is used for weather-proofing.

Parts are pre-cut, so your part largely consists of simply fitting them together and securing them. A cordless drill or screw gun will greatly assist you with this project, along with basic essentials like a hammer (nail gun or stapler is better), ladder, level, measuring tape, pliers, saw and utility knife.  Many of these kits work much in the same way as the sunroom designs that are made to be built by the DIYer.  However, assembling screen porch systems often don’t require the same technical skills as building a more formal room or framing, hanging/installing glass windows does; as is required of a sunroom.

With so many different types and styles on the market, choosing the right railings for your home can become a daunting task. Some basic points to consider are:  your budget, the materials used, the overall appearance, and the practicality of a railing system before you make the investment. When you are comparing deck railing designs and materials, it is important to choose a system that will compliment your home.  Combined this with any deck cover plans that you may have and you’re well on your way to a dream outdoor space that you can safely enjoy for years to come.

Wood Deck Railings

You might think that since most decks are made of wood, that wood railings are the only choice.  While it is true that wood is still the preferred and most financially affordable material to build a deck with, it is not the only choice as you’ll soon read more about.

This is one way to utilize a wood railing and incorporate the addition of a built-in bench. Also, notice the horizontal railing pattern.

In fact, another great option is to use a combination of metal or even glass with the wooden deck.  Railings in many front porch designs are classically white and have the appearance of the vertically positioned rails above.  Wood is still the more popular material for a front yard.

As more composite decking materials are utilized, there will be more designs that include or incorporate these features as well.

However, there are also ways that you can build with wood that are just not possible with metal or glass materials.  One example is to have a built in bench for seating or storage, depending on the style you choose.  In addition to the ideas mentioned, there are also certain accessories for your deck and patio spaces that are more easily adapted to wooden construction.  One example of this is deck lights that go on the end caps of the posts of your railing system.  These can be fitted onto metal or composite pieces but make easy installation with wooden decking materials.

Glass Railing Systems

This is an example of a glass railing system using panels rather than individual pieces or 'slats' of glass.

Every type of deck railing system has its advantages and its setbacks. Glass railings for decks have become increasingly popular within the last five years. Railings made of glass allow you to enjoy an unobstructed view without compromising the safety of those on the deck.  In addition to the aesthetic and safety benefits, railings made of glass are also great wind deterrents. If you live in a windy area, a glass railing system will act as a shield against the wind.

With the benefits come the setbacks. Glass systems are beautiful but they will require constant cleaning to maintain their appearance. If you have children, this is not the greatest choice as you’ll constantly have smudges and finger prints all over them.

The materials for the system are affordable; however, installation may cost a pretty penny. The cost for the materials will average about $40 per lineal foot. Installations costs may vary between contractors. For many homeowners the cost of a glass railing is well worth the investment. After all, views are expensive so why would you block it.

Cable Railing

This upper deck and design is more modern. The use of the cable railing gives it an even more open look and feel.

Cable systems are most often seen in industrial or commercial environments. With new innovative designs, these systems have become more popular for residential decks. Most cable railings are made of powder coated aluminum, which is durable and easy to maintain. If you are looking for a more affordable alternative to glass railings and you want to avoid obstructing your view consider the benefits of installing a cable railing system.

Another option to aluminum is steel.  Steel cable railing is a common way to achieve a more slim and modern look.  Deck ideas that are meant to incorporate these more modern looking features or minimalist appearances rely on materials like concrete, glass and steel.  Cable applications are very modern looking and they will compliment almost any home. The cable deck railing approach provides protection while still allowing for a wonderful view.

This is an innovative way to save a tree limb and build a cable railing system around it. In this case, because of the views, glass was contemplated, but would have led to a need to cut that limb.

Just as with the tubular railing styles, powder coated metals will resist corrosion and require very little maintenance over the course of their long life.  Cable railing systems are far easier to install than glass systems. If you are handy, you can cut the cost of installation all together and take the installation on as a weekend project – depending on the size of your project.

The hardware will range in price between $30 per lineal foot and $70 depending on whom you buy it from. Keep in mind that there are strength requirements and load features that you should make sure you are properly installing to avoid any potentially life-threatening situations.  After all, railings are for safety at their most basic function.

Metal or Iron Railings

This is a modern (small) metal railing. The horizontal appearance gives it an even more modern appeal.

Metal railings will add an interesting decor to these necessary safety elements of any deck. These railings are made out of either wrought iron or cast iron materials and have a timeless quality. Either painted or powder coated – the preferred application – they will last you many years with little maintenance. New technologies in the manufacturing industry make these ornamental systems more affordable than in times past.

You can choose from several different styles depending on your home’s exterior decor. These strong railing systems will stand the test of time. Now, today’s concrete stain and paint choices allow you to finish that floor or patio any way you like. There are also patterns that can be set into the material as it sets. These stamped concrete designs, as they’re called, come in a range of patterns. Some are more organic and nature inspired, while others are more geometric or linear in appearance. In our discussion on retaining wall ideas, we mentioned a technique whereby the form could be used to create a natural wood grain appearance. This similar principle is what is used in creating these patterns. As more people are choosing to create outdoor rooms, there are many great innovations and choices available that are both functional and elegant. So, let’s get into these different approaches.

Concrete Paint

Let’s begin our discussion here about different ways of finishing or resurfacing concrete with concrete paint. Probably the more basic approaches, but one that does require a little bit of introduction. As you might guess, you can’t just roll down some leftover paint that you have from an old project and expect to get any long life from it. There are specific paints used for the express purpose of walking on. Moreover, paints for concrete also need to adhere to certain specifications for issues like moisture control. Aside from the typical recommendations regarding a clean and prepped surface, watch this video to learn more.

Concrete Stain

Similar, in principle, to paints, concrete stain is more of a process and semi-permanent solution. As with all quality projects, preparation is where it starts. Staining concrete involves a cleaning stage, an acid stage and a stain stage.

You can also find kits and products specific for the steps necessary. Here are a few examples:

The transparent, low gloss finish highlights natural variations and texture of concrete, brick, pavers, and unglazed tile and stone. the durable formula provides long lasting decorative color while protecting interior and exterior surfaces from water damage, household chemicals, and wear from foot and vehicle traffic. Ideal for use on floors, patios, pool decks, sidewalks, privacy walls, and driveways. This product is not recommended for use on garage floors. Allow 30 days minimum for new concrete to cure. Clean and etch new or bare concrete with Bond Lok cleaner etcher. Previously painted or stained concrete: Strip off all old coating and then follow bare concrete instructions. Coverage: 200 to 400 sq. ft. per gallon depending on surface porosity. Do not thin. Dry time: Dries to touch in 2 hours, wait 24 hours for application of durable topcoats. Steps:
Cleaning – more than just washing with water, this step should include a thorough degreasing, removal of mildew, and general scrubbing with a solution designed to prep a surface for staining. A hard bristled brush should be used to ensure that you get in all the cracks and crannies of your slab.

If you have a fairly new or clean area, a hose may be sufficient. If you have a rougher surface or one that has spills, stains, grease or mildew, cleaning with a power washer will be your best bet. Keep in mind that if you have cracked or loose concrete pieces, you may end up breaking them off as you power wash it. Better to find out now, then after it is stained.

These larger cracks can be filled and sanded. Smaller cracks can be left for a nice effect. You’ll need to clean with a power sander and water solution to make the concrete ready for the next step. After power sanding (which you can rent at your local home improvement warehouse), you’ll need to thoroughly clean up all the wet concrete fragments and slurry you created. Finally, you can mop the floor to give it a ‘finished’ cleaning surface.

Etching/Staining – This step typically involves some sort of acid product (usually muriatic acid) to etch the concrete and allow the stain to ‘take’ or penetrate properly. You should see some type of visual clue that it is working, this is a bubbling or fizzing appearance on the concrete. When this is complete, you can wash off the excess and get ready for your last step.

Sealing – You’re almost there! This is the final step and one that will ensure your new stained patio looks great for years to come. The sealer will keep any nicks and dings from allowing the gray concrete color to show through your stained patio area. Newer ‘green’ sealers come in water-based and non-toxic styles as well.

Though this is an indoor application, these steps are very similar:

Stamped Concrete

As mentioned, this is probably one of the older techniques in this field of concrete resurfacing. The general procedure depends upon how or what stage of the slab you are in. In other words, if you’re pouring a new slab, then the pattern can be stamped directly into the newly poured surface. This type of application will yield a more long-lasting effect.

Compare this with the other option which is to stamp your chosen design into a fairly thin layer of newly poured concrete that goes over your existing slab. This is still a very viable solution and one that is used most often. Because of the relative newness of this technique, it is often used on or for older patios that are being given a facelift or – what’s it called now – a rejuvenated appearance. Ha! Whatever you call it, it boils down to a brand new look for your patio!

This particular technique is not exclusive of using the stains or paints mentioned above. In fact, many times, these concrete patterns are colored using dyes that can be added to the mix before it is laid. This will ensure a more even color to the finish and one that is part of the concrete itself. Both, the stains and paints will never be quite this permanent – though the stain is nearly so. This is how concrete pavers achieve their uniform look throughout, even when cut. If you chip or cut your stained surface, you’ll see that gray color beneath it. For this reason and others, some people opt for patio pavers to use as their patio flooring. Stamped Concrete Patterns

The following are some pictures of various stamped patterns available from your local stamped concrete contractor. You can also find some of these at the Concrete Network. Custom design solutions are also possible to give you a one-of-a-kind look. The use of a combination of these patterns can also create a nearly limitless number of variations.

This is a more basic pattern, one that you could repeat in an easy stamped fashion into your wet concrete surface.	This pattern is made to look like fieldstone. It is a common pattern in the southwest, stained terra cotta or reddish-brown made to resemble natural flagstone.

This repeating pattern is made to resemble tumbled patio pavers or cobblestone.	This design looks more like a tile than a stamped pattern. It has a more slate appearance using a troweling technique.

In case you’re wondering, one thing that distinguishes the sunroom from an enclosed patio is the use of glass.  The whole point with sunroom ideas is to “let the sun shine”…just like the song!  Sunroom windows are specially designed to keep the space cool and allow light to pass.  Similar in design to those used for greenhouses or conservatories, these windows make a huge difference to the comfort level felt within the room.  If you’ll be building your own sunroom, this is a big consideration to keep in mind.

Sunroom Windows

As you can see, these sunroom windows will allow quite a bit of sunlight to fill your space. You know it will be warm. The key is to use efficient windows and insulation to ensure your sunroom is as comfortable as possible.

As mentioned, there are windows and there are windows.  If you truly want your sunroom to be comfortable, this means energy efficiency.  While wooden and aluminum metal window frames and construction are the most common, there is a better option to examine – polyvinyl choride (PVC) windows.  This material has some distinct advantages over wood, metal and even other vinyl options.

In the best of the best, you’ll find environmentally friendly polyurethane foams used.  Polyurethane foam-filled extrusion windows have been shown to provide superior insulation.  Combine this with a type of frame assembly known as fusion welding in the joints and what you end up with is a nearly air tight window assembly – just what you want!

One more place where the air can leak in is around the window assembly itself.  If you’re doing this insulation yourself, make sure to use a proper weather stripping.  If you have a contractor doing the work, ask them to tell you what level of protection they use in terms of the weather stripping.  Some companies and contractors skimp on these most important elements.  There’s almost no such thing as over-kill when it comes to these insulation features.

Finally, the type of glass you select is important.  Low-E glass is a good step.  However, as the technology continues to evolve, more products have come to market that go further than just having a single special coating.  Now, there are triple layers and more, combined with Argon gas-filled space to give these windows the best energy efficiency properties to date.  You’ll enjoy warmer winters and cooler summers with these higher end products.  If you prefer quality and plan on staying in your home, then the investment in the windows for your sunroom will be well worth it.

Sunroom Furniture

Just as with our discussion of front porch designs, the furniture you use is part of the design process and decor.  In fact, some people will design the room around their favorite sunroom furniture.  These pieces could include things like Adirondack chairs, chaise lounges and other comfortable outdoor patio furniture that is as inviting and comfortable as it is attractive.

If you choose to make yours more of an outdoor room, then you’ll have to consider the type of flooring, tables, rugs and lighting that you’ll include.  If your room is fully enclosed, you can use more exotic hardwood flooring options.  One of the more popular and trending flooring styles is using exotic woods, like Ipe, redwood or teak.

Sunroom Ideas

Some of the more common sunroom ideas include wooden, vinyl or even aluminum designs.  These can all be used to create great game rooms, patio rooms, a home office, garden or even a spa or exercise room.  It is also possible to create an outdoor kitchen or dining area – all enclosed, of course.  These are just some ideas to consider.

In some respects, we have lost this space to more modern design elements like outdoor rooms – backyard patio and living spaces that increase the livable square footage of your home.  However, the front porch is not gone.  In many parts of the country, that porch is coming back.  We’ll explore some of the reasons here and give you some great design ideas for your own cozy porch.

What makes one porch design ‘better’ than another is not necessarily its size, but the way in which you can enjoy the space you’ve created.  There are also specific elements that can be taken into account that will provide more in the way of aesthetics than they do anything structural or functional.

It’s probably a good idea to discuss some of the more popular porch designs or styles that you might see when browsing around.  This will help you get a better idea and feel for the types of period pieces or design elements that might be better suited for your architecture and style of home.

The Victorian style is characteristic of more whimsical shapes and designs among the gable and railing pieces.  In this example, you’ll quickly notice the choice of colors.  This is also a very Victorian style, with the use of bold – if not brash – colors.  The use of trim details, carved pieces and turned posts and rails are common as well.	Here is a more simple style of Victorian porch.  You’ll recognize the detailing on the gables and the characteristic posts and rails.  The details on this home and the porch are not as fanciful or whimsical as other Victorian styles.  Additionally, you’ll find that a simple white or off-white color is equally attractive.

There may be nothing more of an icon than the rocking chair or porch swing as the quintessential piece of porch furniture.  In this photo, we can see the white picket rails, some simple exterior shutters, those white rocking chairs and a nice hardwood porch floor.  In many places, Ipe – an exotic hardwood – is becoming a popular choice for decking material.	This design is a more modern interpretation, combining features of a sustainable home with those of a Craftsman-era look and feel.  The choice of materials in this case gave the facade a more modern look and the two story addition added more depth and (obviously) height to the front porch.

This is the typical looking Craftsman style home with a bold front porch design.  Notice the use of the stone base and robust column features.  Albeit small in this particular case, this mix of simple, yet bold lines gives the porch its prominent stance.  As the gateway into the home, these types of porches served as great welcoming spaces and areas to enjoy the company of friends and family for generations.	The Craftsman-era home has more of an air of modernist design to it.  It often has a simple geometry and clean lines with bold pillars supporting the porch roof.  In some cases – like this – the porch can also be enclosed.  You can still get an idea as to the prominence of the pillars and the use of strong elements, like brick.

Of course, you can also design your own custom porch as well.  With the inspiration from some of the design ideas like the photos above, or from your other searches, you can come up with a porch design that is perfect for your needs.  Some of the elements that you’ll need to take into account are the gable, the railings, (front) doors, brackets and spandrels and more.  Let’s briefly discuss some of the possibly lesser known parts of the porch.

Gables – This is the aspect of the roof where two adjacent slopes meet – a triangular-shaped region.  Often, porch features have this element centered over the front door.  In the Victorian styles, this will often be highly decorative, carved or otherwise distinguishable from other elements of the porch materials, if only painted a different color.

Railings – These are not difficult to understand, but it is in their many variations that we bring your attention.  Similar in many ways to deck railing designs, these are more likely to be made of wood or more modern PVC materials that resist weathering and require less maintenance.  Railings can be square, round or turned – again, common with Victorian styles.  The more square, bold railings are common with Craftsman, Country and Modern or Contemporary styles.

Brackets – We mention this here only to point out that if you don’t want to have too much detailing in your porch, but would like some areas that attract the eye, then you can choose a variety of bracket details.  These will not only help to strengthen corners and joints on your porch, but they will add an aesthetic detail that gives you another dimension to your design.  They can also be used strictly for decorative purposes and installed after construction.

Spandrels – The dictionary definition of a spandrel is that space defined between a curved feature and a rectangular boundary.  In the case of a porch, these elements are what can be used to go between posts of your porch and the header beam or roof line.  They can also be used indoors to – you guessed it – add a Victorian element.  Very often, these features add a lot of detailing to your design.  You can order these to specific dimensions – within 1/16th of an inch in some cases – to fit your existing porch space as well.  Like the railings, these pieces will typically be made of wood, due to the nature of how they are shaped.

Porch Enclosure Room

The enclosed room is one of the more popular ways of extending a patio or porch into more living space.  Depending on how it is enclosed, this type of room can be either a screened porch or you can use it in another way.  As we’ve discussed in our sunroom designs article, the use of glass is the primary difference between these two types.

Using screening can help the space remain open, airy and breezy, while still keeping the insects out.  Since you’ll be enjoying your new porch in some of the prime ‘pest seasons’ it is nice to know you will not have to go inside when the sun starts to set.

There are pergola plans for the novice or more experienced DIYer as well.  Some plans call for a simple post and beam design using standard lumber materials easily sourced from a local home improvement warehouse.  Here at Patio Covers Place, we are supportive of the homeowner who wishes to do their own work in the backyard.  Patio construction is a very fulfilling project – or set of projects as is more likely the case!

The more novice but capable DIYer may appreciate the construction of a pergola kit.  These include all of the plans, materials and sometimes even the hardware – including the screws!  Other kits just include the plans, pre-cut lumber and brackets.  In both cases, these kits can greatly reduce the amount of time spent planning and designing. With some pictures of pergolas, you’d be hard pressed to know if they are a custom design or built from a kit.  The nature of the simple elegance of a pergola lends itself to this feat.

Now, for the more confident homeowner, with the appropriate skills or know-how, you can learn how to build a pergola in no time.  The previous link will lead you to an article with a step-by-step process for building a pergola from the ground up.  It doesn’t include a materials list as this will depend on your own design and choice of materials as well as size dimensions.

Garden Pergola

There are a variety of terms that you’ll hear when you browse online.  While the term arbor and trellis are often used synonymously, the arbor and garden pergola are more than likely discussing the same thing.

This is also simply a way of describing where it is.  In other words, a patio pergola is located either over your patio concrete slab or space or it creates your patio.  In this case, we’re looking at a garden with a lattice roof pergola.  This style makes for a great place to sit and take in the outdoors.

Vinyl Pergola

A vinyl pergola is typically a wooden member that is coated or covered in a vinyl material.  This vinyl is more weather resistant than wood and comes in a variety of colors and patterns.  It can look like real wood grain if it is embossed or stamped as such.  Also, it can be what covers a metal material.  Alumawood™ is a proprietary material that is used in many of the more popular patio cover kits.  These are really aluminum patio covers on steroids.  The fact that these require less maintenance than the traditional wooden pergola is what makes them such an attractive option.

This is just one (colorful) example of an attached pergola.	The classic example of a free standing pergola; this one happens to be a larger pergola with six posts.

The lattice roof pergola comes in several styles; this one is more of an open lattice, some are spaced more closely providing more shade.	This solid roof pergola and patio combination will allow no light to come through the roof in some places.

Since you’re looking for plans, you may or may not have your pergola designs figured out. You can also browse the pergola pictures with descriptions that we’ve written about.  If you want to know how to build a pergola, investing in one of these books will give you a good head start. Take it from someone who went to ‘wing it as you go’ route, it isn’t the wisest choice. You’ll spend countless hours re-drawing your plans, re-configuring your layout and all the rest, because you forgot about some issue in your backyard or decided to add some other element later.

Before you go through all of that headache, plan your design thoroughly, get your materials list and layout your space prior to pouring the footers, cutting the wood and installing your patio pavers or what ever else you’ll be using for your patio floor.  The fact is, you may decide on a completely different design than what you first had in mind.  While not free pergola plans, these downloadable options may be just what you’re looking for.

Wood is the most common choice of materials to build with.  Red cedar and redwood are the most common woods among them.  But, you may find that an alternative material will suit your needs.  This could include an Alumawood brand material – a vinyl style.

Pergola kits may be another option; they take the planning, measuring, cutting and assembling aspects to a different level.  With a kit, you’ll get all of the necessary parts (in most cases) included in your package.  With a little skill (and help from some friends who you can repay with cold beverages and grilled foods), you’ll have your new covered patio space erected in no time.

One of the great joys of building patio covers like the pergola is that it is a simple project that will give you a return on your investment for many years into the future.  There are some maintenance issues to be mindful of, but this is common with any decking designs or outdoor patio or garden structures constructed of wood.

Some of the more attractive pergolas are often made of wood.  It has a natural beauty, charm and warmth about it.  Both red cedar and redwood are popular wood choices.  It is also possible to find sustainably harvested cedar pergola kits.  The one downside is that while both of these woods age gracefully to a nice silvery patina, they do require maintenance.  In order to keep them looking great and avoid issues with splitting or cracking, the use of a good water-based, weather resistant sealer is recommended.  Depending on your climate, you may need to retreat each year. As just mentioned, there are alternatives to using wood as your building material.  There is something timeless and classic with wood, but more options continue to come to market.  Consider the vinyl pergola kit.  This material is often a wood or metal that is coated with vinyl plastic.  What is great about this material is that it can be stamped or embossed to create the look of real wood grain.  With modern technology, the grain pattern looks like a painted wood.  They come in various standard colors, white being one of the more popular.
